Coach Tony is our Head Coach at CrossFit Hakkapeliitta. His relationship with fitness began with youth sports, but really took off when he started lifting weights at his high school in the 8th grade. He played football and track in high school and club lacrosse and rugby while in college at Michigan Tech. Regardless of the sport he was playing, he was always in the weight room. He graduated from MTU in 2011 with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering and turned to long distance running and mud runs since he no longer had access to weights. Tony found CrossFit in 2013 while visiting his college roommate in Virginia Beach. His first workout was the CrossFit Open 13.4, and he never looked back. He got his CFL1 Certification later that year and started coaching. He later realized that he was not meant for engineering, but was much better at coaching CrossFit. In 2018 he was able to make coaching CrossFit his only profession and obtained his CFL2 certification to improve his coaching skills and better serve his athletes. Tony recognizes that CrossFit is tough, but believes that with hard work and dedication anyone can enjoy it and become a better person. His favorite part of coaching is interacting with the athletes and seeing the moment when their movements really click. He says that seeing that joy and emotion on their faces make this the most rewarding job! Outside of the gym, Tony enjoys crocheting and picking rocks. He lives in Houghton with his wife Sara, and their two fur babies Lilo and Tina!
